When random proportional subspaces are also random quotients

We discuss when a generic subspace of some fixed proportional dimension of a finite-dimensional normed space can be isomorphic to a generic quotient of some proportional dimension of another space. We show (in Theorem 4.1) that if this happens (for some natural random structures) then for any proportion arbitrarily close to 1, the first space has a lot of Euclidean subspaces and the second spac...

Sharp Concentration of Random Polytopes

We prove that key functionals (such as the volume and the number of vertices) of a random polytope is strongly concentrated, using a martingale method. As applications, we derive new estimates for high moments and the speed of convergence of these functionals.

Fuchsian groups, coverings of Riemann surfaces, subgroup growth, random quotients and random walks

Fuchsian groups (acting as isometries of the hyperbolic plane) occur naturally in geometry, combinatorial group theory, and other contexts. We use character-theoretic and probabilistic methods to study the spaces of homomorphisms from Fuchsian groups to symmetric groups. We obtain a wide variety of applications, ranging from counting branched coverings of Riemann surfaces, to subgroup growth an...

Anti-concentration for random polynomials

We prove anti-concentration results for polynomials of independent Rademacher random variables, with arbitrary degree. Our results extend the classical Littlewood-Offord result for linear polynomials, and improve several earlier estimates. As an application, we address a challenge in complexity theory posed by Razborov and Viola.

Concentration of Random Determinants and Permanent Estimators

We show that the absolute value of the determinant of a matrix with random independent (but not necessarily i.i.d.) entries is strongly concentrated around its mean. As an application, we show that Godsil–Gutman and Barvinok estimators for the permanent of a strictly positive matrix give subexponential approximation ratios with high probability. A positive answer to the main conjecture of the p...
